January 8th saw the celebration of the 74th Annual Golden Globes Ceremony, recognizing the amazing film and television that came out of 2016.
We have actually had a pretty great 2016 in terms of movies and entertainment. Some of the winners included; “The Crown” – for Best Drama Series; “Zootopia” – for Best Animated Feature Film; and “The People vs O J Simpson” – for Best TV Mini Series. All great and worthy winners!
We also celebrated a lot of amazing acting talent: Aaron Taylor-Johnson rightfully won his Golden Globe for his supporting role in the movie “Nocturnal Animals” (his performance alone is a must see).
The very handsome Tom Hiddleston, and talented Hugh Laurie both won awards for their work on their mini-series, “The Night Manager,” but the movie that stood out on its own, was of course “La La Land.”
La La Land
This film set records winning Seven Awards at this year’s Golden Globes, with both Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone Winning Globes for their parts in the musical, both taking away statues for Best Actor and Actress in a Musical. It also won the stand alone awards for Best Musical along with; Best Original Score, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Original Song. This is obviously a film for your cinema to do list but just in case a few of you are unfamiliar with this musical there’s a bit more about it here.
Basically, the plot consists of a modern romantic musical set in LA following a musician (Gosling), and aspiring actress (Stone) as they fall in love, and try to follow their dreams of opening up a jazz club and becoming famous.
This movie breathes life into a movie genre now seen to be out dated. But it has been met with Universal Acclaim, making $131 million at the Box Office. Along with its Seven Golden Globe wins, the film has also received Eleven nominations at the 70th BAFTA’s, which is more than any other film of 2016. Its nominations include; Best Film, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.
